Ways to Help Kids Stay Focused Through the Holidays!

Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas! With all of these exciting holidays and traditions come lots of parties, extra busy schedules, and sometimes mayhem. With the sugar overload, extreme excitement and so much to look forward to, how do we keep some sense of normalcy to allow our children to keep doing well and stay focused in school during the next two months?

keepkidsfocusedinschoolduringtheholidays2Make sure your child is getting enough sleep. If during this busy time, you find that you are having to wake your kids up and hoist them out of bed in the mornings, you might want to re-think how many late nights they are allowed to stay up for. Although there are many special and exciting events happening, if you make a proper bedtime a firm priority on most nights, your child will benefit greatly.

If she has too many sweets at one time, she seems to become a different child. She becomes wild with bad behavior, and often is nauseous after. She is now fortunately old enough that she is able to verbalize to me that she doesn’t like how she feels after overindulging. Being mindful of how many sweets, sugary and processed foods your child is consuming during the holidays will help to regulate the additional “high” that might be contributing to your child’s wild behavior. This is especially true if you typically feed your children mostly healthy foods, as I do.

It is okay to say no to some. Make a priority of attending the ones with people who mean the most to you. If there is an event or party where you don’t know the people very well or you only feel as if you “should” go rather than really want to go, politely decline.

The true spirit of the holidays is the bond of family and friends. Enjoy the magical time with your children while trying to keep some sense of normalcy.
