A Guide to Tempering The Dreaded Tantrums!

The sounds of ear piercing screams and visions of your child flailing on the floor are enough to make any parent want to have a meltdown themselves. These difficult outbursts are unfortunately a fact of childhood.  How do we best deal with them while keeping our cool?

Tip #1!

First begin with prevention. Try and plan your outings when your children are at their best.  Avoid taking them places right before nap time or mealtimes.  Beware when your child is overtired, hungry, or sick. These are times when they are more prone to emotional outbursts and you might need to be more patient than usual.

Tip #2!

Be firm about your expectations before you begin something or go anywhere.  Let your child know what the rules are before you go to a public place and what the consequences are for not following the rules.  I always remind my kids of this when we pull into the parking lot and before we get out of the car. This way, if your child starts to get out if control, it allows you to be able to remind them of your earlier conversation. If they do start to lose control, be sure to follow through with what you stated. It is too easy to give in to your child’s screams when you are in a public place because of your own anxiety or discomfort when people are watching you.

Tip #3!

Know what remedy might work for your child. Some children might just need to get it all out. You might just need to let them cry until they have expelled their anger and frustration.  Others might be distracted easily by something and be able to move on. You know your child best.

Tip #4!

Lastly, resist the urge to have your own meltdown along with your child. Although you might feel like screaming, too, be sure to keep your voice and actions calm. Remember that this will pass.
