Little Things That Mean a Lot to Kids

Mini Moment That Let Children Know That You Care

Let’s face it- when we are in the midst of our crazy busy lives, we sometimes forget how sensitive our kids are. It is so easy to get caught up in all that we need to get done- chores, work, school, and the million other things that we, as parents, deal with on a daily basis. I often find myself forgetting to just pause and acknowledge each of my kids and to really get a sense of what is going on in their darling minds.

Let go of some of your standards. Allow your kids to get dirty, muddy, splash in the fountain, and anything else that is fun and messy. When I was a teacher, one of my students loved it when her father picked her up from school because he would let her jump in every puddle on the way home when it was a rainy day.

Plan simple special things. Have a special day with each of your children by themselves (it doesn’t have to be expensive – just special), tuck a love note into their lunch box, and create unique traditions that are just your own.

Go the extra mile to acknowledge their efforts. If your child draws you a picture, hang on the refrigerator. Proudly display that homemade picture frame or wear the beautiful necklace made with beads. If they surprise you with a “clean” room, show great enthusiasm for it. Applaud all of their efforts when they are trying to please you and thank your children when they do something kind for you.

Put down the phone, computer, or tablet. One of the best ways you can show your children you care is to actually pay attention. Your kids know whether or not you are giving them 100% of your attention. I sometimes find myself telling my kids to “hold on” or only partially listening. Therefore, I have to remind myself to put myself in their place and remember how it feels to be ignored and to say yes instead of no (sometimes).

Life’s busyness can easily overshadow how important the small things are to our children. It is definitely worth remembering to savor the little things in life. After all, when our children are grown, the memories we will most cherish are the ones about spending precious moments together.
