OITNB’s Big Boo, Lea DeLaria Lays It All Out

Better known as Big Boo from the hit Netflix series, “Orange Is The New Black,” Lea Delaria talks about how her personal life was a huge part of her character development for her iconic character.

You may think that she is playing the part of Big Boo off-set but DeLaria’s character and attitude was the driving force behind her character’s personality. She isn’t modest either in letting people know that she is a woman with hot flashes and keeping it real on body-talk.

Now some of the fans of OITNB may have noticed that over the last couple of seasons Big Boo has dropped some weight and DeLaria contributes this to her diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes while filming the hit series. During filming she says that she lost 60 pounds over a six-month time frame and caused some trouble with fitting into her costume for the show.

Though the weight-loss was rapid she said that she learned to love her body since it changed drastically after losing so much weight so quickly. She inspires me by stating, “my body is an awesome place to be,” which I think all women should strive for.

DeLaria also contributes OITNB for her diagnosis, since she started the show and had insurance she was able to go get checked for diabetes. If some of you worry that her diagnosis is getting in the way of her career, we’re reassured that she is doing so well that she has maintained a healthy blood-sugar level balance that is now equal to that of a healthy person.

She ends with these inspiring words for people that were recently diagnosed with diabetes, “I promise you’ll get to eat cake again. Just love yourself and make yourself better.”

Everyone should heed DeLaria’s advice on self-love and confidence.
