What To Do When You’re Bummed About Back to School!

Whether you’re a domestic goddess (aka stay-at-home mom) like me, or a full-time working parent, your kids going back to school can be a lonely time. Your child moving on to the next grade symbolizes a milestone in her life. Each school year, I come to the realization that my babies are growing up and it is a bittersweet feeling for me.

I am proud that they are growing and developing but a little sad as well. After having done this a few times, I try to mentally prepare myself at the beginning of each school year with a plan of how to keep myself out of a funk with this transition from the carefree days of summer to the busy back to school routine.

It was you and your little one all summer long, but now that school is back in session you may be dealing with sad feelings now that they're gone!

It was you and your little one all summer long, but since school is back in session you may be dealing with sad feelings now that they’re gone.

I like to keep active, so I always try to recruit a few friends to take a walk with me after morning drop-off. I have found that my friends are dealing with the same emotions, so it’s nice to have someone to share my feelings with. If you are a person who enjoys outdoor exercise or the gym, getting a little activity in can be a great mood booster.

Take this kid-free time to get busy — whether it’s some decluttering, cleaning up, switching closets and drawers over, or any other project you’ve been meaning to get to, now is the time. With our kids home for the summer, it’s easy to get behind on these things, so here’s your chance! It will keep you busy and give you a sense of accomplishment.

Connect with your friends. After being busy with our own children all summer, it’s really nice to get back in touch with friends. A phone conversation, lunch together, or just grabbing a quick cup of coffee are great ways to get out and connect with the people who know you best.

Make the most of the weekends. You may not have much weekday down time with your children, but I find that the weekends are golden. Do whatever activities that are special to you and your family, whether it be outdoor activities, fun baking projects, or just cuddling under some blankets. It will mean as much to your children as it does to you.
Remember that as with all things, you, too will get used to the new busy routine and adjust.
