Everyone has an opinion, but in fashion, there’s one opinion that matters more than anyone else’s, and that’s Anna Wintour’s. The Vogue Editor-in-Chief is a seasoned professional on all things fashion and pop culture, and she’s pretty much the one everyone in fashion wants to impress. So when it came to analyzing Meghan Markle’s wedding gown, the world was waiting to see what Wintour would have to say.

“I think she’s amazing and the royal wedding had the whole world watching and I think that her choice was brilliant,” she said. “It was sophisticated. It was chic. It was grown-up. It was an English designer, albeit one that was working for a French house, which in a way was a message to the world: Yes, I’m from somewhere else, but I belong,” Wintour said in a new video series, “Go Ask Anna!”

“The fact that she chose to walk down the aisle by herself, I also thought spoke for an independent woman,” she explained. “I think the picture of the Duchess of Sussex’s mother [Doria Ragland] at the chapel at the wedding was so inspiring to so many women, men all over the world,” she added.

Wintour was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II during a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in 2017, so she knows a thing or two about British fashion. And she gives Markle’s Givenchy dress an A+!
