Beauty Products You Didn’t Know Were Illegal

Bella Breakdown

Today, we hardly think twice about what beauty products we use. You probably have never thought twice about the color of your lipstick, that lower back tattoo, or even what was in your bra.

Strangely enough, in the last century we have come a long way when it comes to legality in the beauty department. There were a number of things that were regulated by the law when it came to our bodies, especially for women. Here are the beauty products outlawed over the last century:

1. Red Lipstick
Red lipstick, worn by suffragettes, was thought to be provocative. The New York Board of Health believed that the lipstick contained poison for the men they would kiss… which would be a little awesome, but was not the case.

2. Hair Dye
Doctors believed there was no way to dye hair that was healthy and wouldn’t use noxious gas. The women of the 20’s kept dying their hair anyways.

3. Latex Bra Inserts
During World War 2, latex bra inserts were banned because the rubber was needed for the war effort.

4. Tattoos
The state of New York banned tattooing in the 1960’s, blaming tattoo needles as the cause of a Hepatitis B outbreak. This ban isn’t lifted until 1997. It’s safe to say people didn’t listen to the ban.
