I’ll be the first to admit it: sometimes, coffee just doesn’t do it. Whether I’m racing to meet deadlines, pulling an all-nighter, on a long road trip, or slept restlessly the night prior, there are some exhaustion-filled days that even a double shot of espresso can’t knock out.

And the same is true for energy drinks, soda, sugar… the single-use form of caffeine just won’t cut it. It’s like a hybrid of the two is needed, offering the ultimate amount of caffeine to keep me going through the day. If you can relate to the coffee fallout, you’ll be delighted and intrigued to hear of Pepsi’s newest beverage—a coffee-infused soda.

Pepsi Café will be available for a limited time in the spring of 2020. With nearly twice as much caffeine as a regular serving of soda, the coffee-infused cola will be available in two unique flavors: original and vanilla. According to the press release, the roasted notes of coffee pair perfectly with the signature flavor of Pepsi, but I’m not sure I’m totally sold on that.

The idea of carbonated coffee seems too distant from the flat coziness of a good latte, but you can’t knock it until you try it. Intended to “meet the needs of energy, indulgence, and refreshment” the product is inspired by Pepsi’s original coffee-soda, the Pepsi Kona released in the 90s. I guess they were being serious when they said the 90s were back!
