HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones’ new season is finally here and the finale season has already shattered viewership records. Almost two years after the seventh season finale, 17.4 million viewers tuned in to the fantasy drama becoming HBO’s biggest telecast in history.

Not only did the critically-acclaimed series make HBO history, but it has also become the most-watched scripted entertainment program of the year. Beating out the previous record holder CBS’ ‘Big Bang Theory.’ Not too shabby for a show airing on a network that isn’t broadcasted in as many homes as the local station.

‘Game of Thrones’ didn’t just succeed on the air, but the show also set Twitter ablaze with 5 million tweets. The most that the series has ever gotten thanks to the big reveal of Jon Snow, played by Kit Harrington, finding out who his parents are. Before the final season’s premiere, it was reported that a billion views could be possible, however, there is no way of knowing exactly how many tuned in due to the many distribution channels.

Despite viewership not being as high as expected there is still a chance those numbers could increase after streaming views are added. Much like what happened after the seventh season premiered and viewership increased almost 32 million views per episode.

If the ‘GoT’ premiere garnered 17.4 million views just imagine what the series finale numbers are going to do. Check out more information about TV’s favorite show in the video above.
