How To Decorate Your Living Room With Art

Bella Breakdown

As us millennials settle down and begin buying our own houses, there is nothing more exciting than the prospect of decorating our new spaces. I have talked for hours with friends about what themes would go best in their places and where they should buy their pieces from.

Should they go for a fresh, simple Japanese style decoration? Or make it more homey? Should they buy from Ikea and get affordable furniture? Or should they go all out and purchase from Anthro? It can be really fun, but also overwhelming, to decorate a new space.

There are so many decisions to make, and there is one decision that can be especially hard because it really brings together or tears apart a room: the wall art and decorations. If you follow these steps to DIY gallery walls, then you can rest assured that your space will have balance and feng shui.

Firstly, it’s important to choose an anchor piece. This is a large piece of art that you want to be the center of the whole gallery. Therefore, put this piece over the center of your couch and work around it with your other pieces, building out from the center.

After you find your anchor piece, pick other, smaller pieces that you really love. They shouldn’t match perfectly with the center piece. The important thing is that you have a few key colors that you can play with that are consistent across the pieces.

If you find a piece that you adore but it doesn’t work at all with what you already have, never fear! Just choose a funky retro frame that has a similar color to a central color in your anchor piece.

Besides choosing pieces that very in style and theme, you should also try to choose pieces that have different textures to make your gallery captivating and diverse. If everything on your wall is an oil paint, the wall is going to seem cluttered and repetitive.

Finally, pull away from the piece and look at it as a whole. Is there anything you can add off of the wall to your decorations to compliment the piece? For example, try putting a few pillows on your couch that match the color themes you have chosen, or adding a vase of flowers to your coffee table that compliments the palate.
