How To Get Comfortable At A New Gym

Bella Breakdown

It’s January and the gyms are packed. Whether you’re an experienced gym goer who’s just joined a new facility, or if this is your firs time ever in a gym, it can be intimidating to walk in on the first day. With your fitness goals in mind, you can embrace the gym and follow a few tips to get the most out of your experience.

1. Do take advantage of the free training session

A lot of gyms offer one or two free personal training sessions when you join. Even if you’re not into the idea of personal training, this is a great way to learn about all the different pieces of equipment in the gym. Plus, the trainer can tailor some exercises to your needs, so you have an idea of what to do on your own.

2. Don’t go overboard

Even if you’re really pumped about getting fit this year, you’re not going to lose 10 pounds in one gym session. Use your first few gym visits to try lots of equipment, but don’t push yourself too hard or try to overdue it with a three hour session. Chances are, you’ll just get burned out and not want to come back.

3. Bring a notebook

LOTS of people do this, but if you’re worried about looking like a gym nerd, you can use your phone instead. Start logging the exercises you do, and make note of things you do and don’t like. Plus, this is a great way to track your progress, meaning you’ll stay motivated as you start to see improvement.

4. It’s okay to copy other people

While you’re knocking out your cardio on the elliptical, take a look around and see what other people are doing at the gym. Make note of any exercises you want to try, but be sure to consult a professional if you’re not sure how to do them safely. There is always gym staff on hand to answer your questions!
