How To Maximize Your Credit Card Points For Travel

Bella Breakdown

Travel is ever more expensive, and it’s important to find ways to maximize your money when planning trips. Credit cards are a great way to find “free money” and extra savings for your travel funds. Whether you decide to get a credit card specifically designed for travel, or want to use your current card, follow some simple saving tips.

1. Consider a card connected to your favorite airline

If you travel a lot, and typically fly with one specific airline, a credit card with that airline can be a great way to rack up points. United for instance has a great credit card, with some amazing sign on bonuses. Also make sure you sign up with your favorite airline’s loyalty program, maximizing all the benefits you can get!

2. Use your card for big purchases

Obviously you have to be smart with your credit card, but using it for big purchases that you can pay off quickly is a great way to maximize points and rewards. Just make sure you keep track of your balance!

3. Pick a card that you can use internationally

This is important. If you are traveling internationally, or plan to soon, make sure your credit card is easy to use abroad, and doesn’t come with any international charges or fees.

4. Look for a great sign-up bonus

If you’re in the market for a new card, or an additional card, look for one with a great sign-up bonus. This can come in the form of points or cash. Just make sure you meet the requirements to get your reward!

5. Use your card’s shopping portal if you have one

Some cards, like Chase, offer additional rewards and points if you shop through the bank’s online shopping portal. Many of your favorite stores may be included, and you’ll get more points or cash back on the things you already planned to buy.

6. Move your rewards into a separate account

Whenever you get cash back or bonuses, move that money into a travel savings account and don’t touch it. This way, you can see your savings grow and even earn interest. Yay free money!
