KFC Is Planning To Go Meatless With Plant-Based Options

Bella Breakdown

First Burger King, then Qdoba and now KFC might be making the switch over to plant-based food options. The chicken fast food chain has seen the meatless meat craze and with the lack of alternative chicken, options plan to test out their own meatless menu.

“We don’t see chicken as the big trend right now,” KFC’s U.S. president Kevin Hochman told CNN Business. “But we are definitely looking at it in earnest and meeting with the big suppliers of alternative proteins to understand the market and where it’s headed.

The trend of going meatless has been on the rise in recent years and according to research done by Euromonitor International, the U.S. meat-substitute retail market could reach $2.5. billion by 2023. Globally, the $18.7 billion markets will grow to $23 billion by 2023.

Hochman says that if plant-based poultry “gets more and more mainstream and we think it’s right for our customers, we certainly would test it.” Until KFC begins to roll out its chicken alternative items, customers can turn to Burger King who launched its Impossible Whopper this year. Soon, pizza lovers will also be able to buy meatless options from Little Caesars who recently announced that it is testing an Impossible pizza.
