Aretha Franklin Dies At 76

It was reported on Thursday morning, August 16th that Aretha Franklin passed away at her home in Detroit. Aretha was admitted to the hospital on Sunday evening of August 12th, and was reportedly gravely ill. It seemed to be only a matter of time until we lost the “Queen of Soul”.

Aretha led a revolutionary career. She was born in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up singing gospel at her church. It was clear from a very young age that Aretha and her voice would be taking the world by storm. Aretha signed with Columbia records when she was just 18 years old. Her 1967 remake of Otis Redding’s, “Respect”, became an anthem for the civil rights and feminist movements in the 1960’s. Aretha was the first female inducted into the Rock n’ Roll hall of fame in 1987.

Aretha has been considered a national treasure, singing at President Obama’s first inauguration, as the crowd watched in utter awe. She is one of the highest selling artists of all time. She is beloved in Detroit, where she grew up most of her life. She was a philanthropist and an inspiration for many artists who followed in her footsteps. Aretha’s music is sewn into the fabric of United States history, and she is truly the essence of a legend.
