It is definitely possible that romantic comedies, and television couples, especially Ross and Rachel, have made us believe that the on again, off again relationship is something that is cute or romantic. The fact of the matter is breaking up and making up actually isn’t all that cute, in fact it could be really damaging to our psyches.
People who are involved in on-off again relationships are more likely to suffer from mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Studies have also shown that people who keep breaking up and getting back together with the same partner are likely in relationships that are abusive, less committed, and more confrontational overall.
It might be time to consider the fact that being alone is a lot better for you than getting back together with someone who, overall, makes you feel terrible. It isn’t fair to say that every on-off again relationship is like this.
Sometimes there are external factors, such as distance, that could be causing a couple to break up and make up again and again. However, if you find yourself if one of these relationships, it’s important to take a step back and put yourself and your mental health first.
