Uber Launches Submarine Tours Of Great Barrier Reef

Uber may not be a favorite among its employees or in the stock market, but that’s not stopping the ride-share company from expanding its services. The world’s first scUber ride departs Heron Island on May 27 and will cost $1,500 per person.

As part of the services, the passenger will dive down to a maximum of 30 meters, which is around the same levels reached by the most advanced scuba divers. They’ll also get a view of Australia’s most recognizable World Heritage Site in a battery-powered submarine.

The ride will take one hour and will only operate on set dates between May 27 and June 3. After leaving Heron Island, the scUber service will then move on to Agincourt Reef where it will operate between June 9 to June 18.

For those lucky enough to book a trip, the $1,500 price tag will also include a helicopter pick-up for the Heron Island departures and a chopper transfer for the Agincourt Reef departures. Uber also plans to match the price and donate the money to reef conservation group Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef.

The scUber will stay within the sections of the reef designated for tourism operations, remaining on clear seaways that avoid coral. Operated by qualified pilots in conjunction with Tourism Queensland, scUber says its aim is to protect and showcase the reef.
