What To Expect In Couples Therapy

Bella Breakdown

You should never be ashamed of the fact that you are in therapy. The same goes for when you and your partner decide it’s time to go to therapy. We are not all equipped to handle the struggles that come with having confrontation with our partners.

Some of us may not be able to communicate our thoughts and feelings effectively, or maybe you and your partner have experienced some sort of trauma together that has wrenched your relationship. Whatever the issue is, therapy will give you a lot of tools to help your relationship. Here is what you might come across while you and your partner are in couples therapy:

Your therapist might direct the whole of a session to one partner more than the other.
This is especially true if this person is the least talkative of the two. The therapist does this to help the person understand themselves and their needs, in addition to helping the partner understand the other person.

Things might come out in your session that you were not expecting.
This could come in the form of a situation your partner has never told you about, past or present. It could be a habit that annoys your partner that you never knew about. Expect the unexpected in couples therapy.

You will experience a breakthrough.
Whether this is through the tools the therapist gives you, and you find that your communication has made leaps and bounds, or you might realize that maybe the two of you can’t work through your issues. Either way, at some point therapy will help you realize something about your relationship.
