Why Your Migraines Should Be Taken More Seriously

If you have ever experienced a bad migraine in your life, then you understand how debilitating they can truly be. It seems migraines have long since been lumped in as, ‘just another headache,’ but new research has shown that some women experience migraines that are comparable to the pain of childbirth. Some doctors are even urging that people begin to take migraines more seriously.

A recent study showed that women rated the pain of their worst migraine, on a scale from 1-10, around an 8.9. Whereas the same women rated the pain of child birth around a 7.5. That is one painful migraine that should not be taken lightly! Though unfortunately for intense migraine sufferers, it seems to be something that gets swept under the rug. Many of those who participated in the study said that they try to hide the pain from coworkers and friends because people just don’t take their pain seriously.

Migraines do tend to be more common in women. It usually affects women around the age of 12, when puberty begins, and has the highest potency during their most productive years. But it’s not just women who complain about having migraines. Though men cannot equate pain to childbirth, Dr. Sheena Aurora says that she’s had plenty of men compare the pain of migraines to things like kidney stones. Dr. Aurora says it’s extremely important that when someone says they deal with intense migraines on a regular basis, that they are taken seriously by their doctors as well as peers.
