Passport 101 For Traveling

Bella Breakdown

Before relaxing at your travel destination there is some planning needed, especially with the passport. Here is a guide for all you need to know about passports to get the most out of your travel experience.

Most countries accept passports, though some require a travel visa. The Henley Passport Index is based on the travel freedom passports provide for their holders. The U.S. and U.K. tied for fourth place offering 186 countries to travel. The best passport is Japan’s offering 189 countries to travel.

There is also a secret State Department loophole to apply for a duplicate passport. Frequent travelers can leave one passport at a consulate to wait for a visa and take the other with them on trips. To apply for the duplicate you need to fill out an application, passport photos, send in your current passport, and pay the $110 fee.

There are some restrictions for the duplicate passport including expiring after two years and the possibility for the request of the duplicate to be denied. This system also makes it easier to reinstate permission to travel if the primary passport is lost while away.
