Your Organic Snacks Aren’t Healthier Than Junk Food

Bella Breakdown

As the world continues to become more health-conscious many food companies are turning their attention to more organic products. Now organic snacks are still a better option compared to non-organic, but nutrition experts say it’s still junk food.

When it comes to organic snacks they may have less food coloring or genetically modified ingredients, but they can still include the same amount of sugar and not enough of protein and fiber. Making them identical to non-organic snacks.

“Now that you see more and more junk food products with organic labels, it can create a health halo, which may mislead consumers,” said Frank Hu, Harvard professor at the School of Public Health. “Being organic itself will not offset the detrimental effects of many ultra-processed foods, which are typically loaded with added sugars, sodium, and refined starch.”

Hu advises that if you are shopping for more organic snacks make sure to look at the ingredients list and make sure the products include whole grains, nuts, fiber, and protein, and minimal added sugar. Also checking the USDA label will also help. You’re advised to look for the USDA Organic Seal. While “100 Percent Organic” and “Organic” receive the USDA seal, if a food “Contains Organic Ingredients,” it’s not required to comply with any of the other organic restrictions.
