Why “thank you, next” Is The Type Of Love Song Women Need Right Now

Bella Breakdown

Anyone who has been through a breakup will agree that it can be one of the most shattering life experiences. Everything is going along great and then, bam! You’re knocked on your dumped and all alone again.

While we’re all sick of hearing the “celebrities are just like us” mantra, sometimes it’s a good reminder that other people (rich people!) experience the same heartbreak. And it’s been a hell of a ride for Ariana Grande lately. Breaking off an engagement with Pete Davidson, and coming to terms with the loss of ex and friend, Mac Miller, all while being under the microscope of pop stardom would be enough to drive anyone to tears and a gallon of ice cream.

Through the past few months though, Grande has been able to maintain her fierce positivity and confidence. Sure, she’s probably had her share of cry sessions and drunk wallowing, but her attitude through it all is something to acknowledge and be inspired by.

We’re living in the T-Swift age where every artist’s relationship highs and lows are funneled into angry breakup songs, heartbreaking ballads or sugar coated pop. These have their place, and can be equally as therapeutic when going through heartache of your own. But rarely do you have a song with as much brutal honestly, self confidence and maturity as “thank u, next.”

Grande lays it all out on the table — names, pain, suffering, disappointment. Yet, the most powerful statement is the fact that she can actually thank the men that have come and gone, reflect on the things she’s learned and acknowledge her own growth and gaining empowerment. All in one uber catchy three minute song!

As the singer tweeted when releasing the ode to loves lost, there’s “no drags…. no shade….. jus love, gratitude, acceptance, honesty, forgiveness … and growth.” At a time when “self care” and self indulgence are at the forefront of millennial minds, it’s important to step back and reflect on the things that have made you who you are, and to express gratitude for the experiences that have shaped you.

And at the end of the day, we all need time to be alone, and to make our own needs and desires a priority. There’s no shame in being single, or even better, in wanting to be single. People will come and go, but you’ve always got to look out for you. As your girl Grande sings:

“I’ve met someone else,
We havin’ better discussions.
I know they say I move on too fast,
But this one gon’ last.
‘Cause her name is Ari,
And I’m so good with that.”
