After 20 years of giving fans lackluster X-Men films, Fox ended its franchise series with the worst debuting film in franchise history thanks to Dark Phoenix.

With a budget of $200 million, the Sophie Turner-lead film only took in $33 million in its box office debut, coming in right after The Secret Life of Pets 2. Not only is Dark Phoenix the worst X-Men franchise debut, but it is now the worst box office debut for any film for the 2019 summer season.

There could be many reasons for the movie’s failure, but the main one is most likely terrible reviews. With a 23% on Rotten Tomatoes, the poorly received reviews on one of the most beloved characters have to be a major blow to the studio right before Marvel takes over.

On top of critics trashing the film, fans had no faith in Turner to carry the film. Though part of one of TV’s biggest show’s, Game of Thrones, Turner’s take on Jean Grey was just introduced in 2016’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Though financially successful, but still one of the worst-reviewed X-Men films, making fans a little skeptical that the actress would truly be able to capture all that Jean Grey is.
