Make Your Own Conversation Heart Cookies

Conversation hearts are just about the cutest thing we’ve ever seen. Who doesn’t love a cheeky little message spelled in sugary perfection? This Valentine’s Day you can deliver those sweet simple words on an even sweeter surprise, a delicious homemade cookie!

To whip up a batch of playful perfection you’ll need:

  • 2 c. butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 c. powdered sugar
  • 4 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • parchment paper
  • thin royal icing

Beat butter and vanilla at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamed. Whisk together powdered sugar, flour, and baking powder. Gradually add sugar mixture to butter mixture, beating at low speed until blended. Flatten dough into a disk; and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill 1 hour to 3 days.

Preheat over the 350. Place dough on a lightly floured surface, roll to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with desired cookie cutters. Place 8 cookies 1/2 inch apart on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 12 to 13 minutes. Cool on baking sheets 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Follow the wet-on-wet icing technique to decorate cookies and allow to dry 1 hour. Using royal icing, pipe a thin border around the edge of the cookie. Fill in the center of the cookie with an even layer of icing. Immediately pip another color of the icing onto the base layer to spell out the heartfelt phrase ; )
