Reed diffusers are a cute way to freshen the fragrance of any room in your home that’s easy to match your decor theme. Though they may be a bit pricy to buy in-store, there is a more cost-effective way to make your own DIY reed diffuser that you can match with your decor.

The key piece you’ll need for this DIY project is a vase or a bottle, it’s recommended to use one with a narrow neck to slow down the evaporation process and make your essential oils last longer. Try to find something that matches your decor theme so it can match your current decor easily and choosing a bottle or vase that is big enough to fit the amount of fragrance oil with reeds.

For the diffuser oil, you’ll need a 1/2 cup of sweet almond oil to act as the base, using a thin oil base helps the fragrance travel up the reeds easily. You’ll add 30-50 drops of your favorite essential oil for every half cup of the base oil (depending on how strong you prefer the fragrance). For the reeds, you’ll only need 5 to 8 rattan diffuser reeds (depending on the size of the opening of the bottle or vase).

Once you add the oil to your vase or bottle, add the reeds accordingly based on the size of the neck. After letting reeds soak for an hour, flip the reeds to saturate the other side of the reeds. It’s recommended to flip the reeds once a week for a stronger fragrance and replace the oil once a month.

Here are a couple of essential oil combos for seasonal fragrances:

Spring – Citrus, Lavender, Cedarwood, Jasmine, and Geranium.

Summer – Magnolia, Lemon, Lavender, and Bergamot.

Fall – Cinnamon, Juniper Berry, Cardamom, Cedarwood, and Balsam.

Winter – Patchouli, Douglas Fir, Spruce, Cedarwood, and Juniper Berry.
