Actress Ruby Rose was recently casted as Batwoman in the CW’s “Arrowverse”. After this news broke the Twitter trolls emerged from their caves to berate the casting choice. Part of Batwoman’s background is that she is Jewish and a lesbian. Ruby, however, is not Jewish, and has been deemed not the right kind of LGBTQ representative, because she has always identified as “gender fluid”.

Ruby, much like most of her fans, and most people could not help but scoff at these Twitter remarks. Before leaving twitter Ruby wrote, “Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from…I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’.” Actors, for years, have been playing characters who do not share the same sexual orientation, or cultural background as themselves for years. So, why now is Ruby getting flack for this casting decision?

It makes you wonder if internet trolls spend their time waiting for their opportunity to run someone off Twitter, or any other form of social media. Ruby made a point in her last Twitter post, asking why we can’t just support one another in our journeys? Ruby isn’t hurting anyone by acting as a character. Why can’t we ban together on the internet to stop actual injustices?
