Things are getting hot in Hollywood again. United Artists, a division of Amazon MGM Studios, is turning up the temperature as it nears a deal to take over Heat 2, Michael Mann’s long-awaited follow-up to his legendary 1995 crime epic Heat.

The project, previously in development at Warner Bros., is now in final negotiations to move under the United Artists banner. Mann — who wrote and directed the original film starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer — is back in the director’s chair and co-writing the screenplay, based on his 2022 novel Heat 2 (co-authored with Meg Gardiner).

While no casting has been confirmed, buzz in the industry suggests that Leonardo DiCaprio is being eyed to step into the role of master thief Chris Shiherlis, originally played by the late Val Kilmer. If it comes together, this would mark DiCaprio’s first on-screen collaboration with Mann as director — though the two have worked together before when Mann produced Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator.

Fans of the original film might recall that Shiherlis was one of the few members of Neil McCauley’s (De Niro) crew who survived the explosive finale. Given that parts of the Heat 2 novel take place five years after the first film, DiCaprio’s older, seasoned take on the character could fit perfectly into the story’s dual timeline — part prequel, part sequel.

The producing lineup is equally powerhouse: Mann will be joined by Jerry Bruckheimer, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt. Bruckheimer, who’s recently delivered hits like Top Gun: Maverick and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, brings a proven knack for revitalizing beloved franchises.

Though original cast members Al Pacino and Ashley Judd are not expected to return, the film will feature a completely new ensemble — and some of Hollywood’s top talent are already being floated for roles. Sources say Austin Butler, Bradley Cooper, and Adam Driver (who starred in Mann’s Ferrari) have all been discussed for key parts, though no deals are locked in.

If DiCaprio officially signs on, Heat 2 would mark his first sequel since 1991’s Critters 3, the humble beginnings of a career that has since earned him an Oscar, countless nominations, and a permanent place among Hollywood’s elite.

With Mann’s signature style, a new generation of actors, and a story that bridges past and present, Heat 2 is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated crime dramas in years.

One thing’s certain — Leonardo DiCaprio might just be stepping into his hottest role yet.
