While there may always be some sort of temptation to go for the “safe” option when purchasing wardrobe staples, safe doesn’t always have to mean neutrals. Or classic. Or boring. Safe can mean “I liked this item, and I’m confident I will get its worth through the number of times I plan to wear it,” and if you’re happy with it, that’s what matters.

There is something to be said about classic, timeless pieces though, like that perfect winter coat. Give your go-to an updated twist by shifting away from the typical black, navy, or camel and buying a winter coat in a bright primary color. Unsure how to style it? Just take a hint from the queen of classical styling, Kate Middleton.

While she may typically stay within certain royally-approved dress code, the Duchess shook things up recently with a new puffer jacket. The casual,streetwear-inspired winter staple was in bright red, and Kate wasn’t the first to be seen sporting a bright red puffer. In fact, her “new” style wasn’t even that new… Princess D was seen sporting a similar one back in the ‘90s! And now the trend has come back around.

Kate styled hers festively over a green sweater, while Princess Diana paired hers over a black turtleneck with a baseball cap and black skinny jeans. Both looks are royally cool and cozy and serve as great inspiration for how to style a statement piece.
