Fun & Impactful Ways to Celebrate Earth Day With the Family

An Earth Day Celebration The Whole Family Can Enjoy

Earth Day, which is this Friday, April 22, is a day to remind us to preserve our precious planet and home.  It is also a wonderful opportunity to teach our children how to do their part to reduce the impact we each have on the planet, as well as ways we can preserve the beauty and health of Mother Earth.

earthday2016-2Make a pact as a family to do one thing this year to help preserve the Earth.  You could decide to use only reusable bags rather than plastic at the grocery store each week, to turn off light switches when you aren’t in the room, or to be better about recycling.  Other things you can do are to do a park or beach clean-up.  Whatever you plan to do, stick with it throughout the year!

Find a few things your kids can do- and explain why.  Switch from paper lunch bags to a reusable bag (which saves tons of trash each year), use stainless steel or glass water bottles that you can refill, rather than using new plastic water bottles each day.  Teach your children to turn off the water while brushing teeth (and do the same yourself).

Think of ways to reduce.  Switch from paper towels to reusable, washable towels.  Turn your thermostat down in the winter and up in the summer when you aren’t home.  Ride bikes or walk places rather than driving everywhere.  Line dry your clothes rather than using the dryer.  Anything you can do to use less energy is beneficial.

Think of ways to reuse all year long.  Have a Halloween costume swap with neighbors and friends rather than buying new ones, grow your own wheat grass rather than using plastic grass for Easter baskets, do some shopping at the thrift store rather than buying new.  These are also great money savers as well.

Think of all the ways you can recycle.  Before you throw something away, try and think of whether there is another use for it.  Rather than throwing away clothes or shoes, donate them.  Even the tin foil on each Hershey kiss is recyclable!   Encourage your children to ask how they recycle at their school.  Think of the amount of trash a school generates each day.  Donating old sheets and towels to a homeless shelter or animal rescue for bedding is a great way to recycle them.  Remember one person’s trash might be another’s treasure!

No matter how you choose to celebrate Earth Day this year, know that each way you can Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle will make our Earth a better place.
