Keep the Kids Entertained When Traveling So You Can Keep Your Sanity Intact

From now through the end of the calendar year, our lives are filled with busy things going on. In addition to all of the holiday shopping, parties, and preparing, many of us will be traveling to see family and friends for the holidays. This is one of the busiest times of year to travel, so when you are hitting the road (or the skies) with your kids, it is especially important to be prepared and to have all the necessary tricks to keep them occupied on your journey.

Snacks

Having an array of portable snacks to bring with you is definitely an important one. Bring things that travel well, so that you don’t end up with smashed bananas, melted chocolate or crumbs everywhere. Also, keep the snacks low in sugar because the last thing you want to do is to get your kids all hyped up when they are expected to sit still for an extended period of time. Some great ideas of snacks that are portable are edamame, bagels, granola bars, cheese sticks, dried fruit and nuts, water bottles and pretzels.  It’s also a great idea to have a mystery treat for any really desperate moments and to use as incentives (aka bribes).

A bag of tricks

Have a bag filled with fun games, coloring pages and toys to keep your kids busy while you are traveling. This is a great time to go to the dollar store and stock up on little fun things that are new to them. Any fun surprises will keep them busier longer. Think of each of your children and what they enjoy and either pack a bag with everything in it or allow them to each carry a small backpack with their own personal things.

Technology

This is definitely not the time to worry about your usual quota of minutes that you allow your child to play on their devices or time allowed to watch TV. If it means the difference between keeping your child quiet versus angering a plane full of people, go for it! Maintaining your sanity is much more important at this time. Be sure to bring head phones and power cords just in case.

Although the holidays are hectic, take the time to enjoy yourself and this time with your kids. Make memories that you will talk about for years to come.
