Taking Care of Mom and Dad: How to Prevent and Tackle Colds and the Flu

Parents, Don’t Let the Yucky Flu Get You Down!!

Our job as parents is full time, 24-7. We can’t call in sick or coast through the day with our head down on the desk. We don’t have time to be sick! So what do WE do to both prevent getting sick, and to feel better as quickly as possible when we do?

How To Fend Off the Flu

The first, and most obvious goal is to not get sick in the first place. The best way to prevent the transfer of germs is to wash your hands. The CDC recommends scrubbing your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds (hum “Happy Birthday” 2 times). If you are at the playground or zoo, bring some alcohol based hand sanitizer with you. It’s not as effective as handwashing, but definitely helps. If you work, you are bound to be around sick co-workers at some point.

If possible, get some fresh air flowing. I used to keep my classroom windows cracked open just a little bit all year long. Keep surfaces touched by lots of people clean (think keyboards, phones, etc.) with something like Lysol or other sanitizers. Another preventative I do is to take a probiotic every day to help keep the good bacteria in my body prolific. Lastly, a great night’s sleep each night is really important.

So, you got sick? Here are some natural ways to help feel better and to fight off the virus as soon as possible. At the first sign of feeling bad, I start to take a dose of Oil of Oregano twice a day. It has natural antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties. Vitamin C provides a great immunity booster. Ginger contains antiviral properties as well. Make a tea with raw sliced ginger, lemon, and my next cold fighting recommendation—honey. Raw, natural honey is known to be antibacterial and antiviral as well. Plus, it tastes great, too!

When you are congested, a nice warm or hot shower will help clear some of it. Then, sleep with a cold mist humidifier to help get a better night’s sleep. Years ago, I had an elderly neighbor, who swore by her “hot toddy for sickness” and would make it for me at night whenever I was sick. It was chamomile tea, a squeeze of lemon, a few teaspoons of honey, and a generous shot of whiskey. It definitely helped me sleep a little better!

When all else fails, go for the pain relievers (ibuprofen is the strongest and lasts the longest) and cold medicines. They will help you sleep at night and rest better to get well sooner.
