Help Your Kids Beat the End-of-the-Year Slump!

The weather is getting warmer and summer is it within sight. This is often a time when kids start to get spring fever and to feel less motivated to do their best in school. After all of their hard work this year, what are some ways that we can keep them motivated to finish the school year strongly?

Review the routine that you already have in place. Stay consistent with the structure that you had set up for homework, test prep, etc. at the beginning of the school year.Ā  Go over everything with them again to remind them of how important the remaining weeks of school are.

To keep your child motivated, do a countdown for the last month of school. Being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel might help them to finish strong. Another strategy to do would be to mark all of the special days on the calendar that will be happening during the last month of school.Ā  The reminder of all of the fun vents to come will also be encouraging.

Enjoy the great weather in the afternoons and evenings so your kids don’t feel like they’re missing out.Ā  Eat dinner outside, play a game of tag while dinner is cooking, ride bikes, blow bubbles, and have watermelon outside for dessert.Ā  These activities will give your kids a sense of summer.

Offer incentive (aka slight bribery). Let them know that if they can keep up their excellent work for the last few weeks of school, there will be something special awaiting them at the end. I am not one who is really into buying toys and other ā€œstuffā€, but rather having an experience. Think of a place that they would really enjoy going (a trip to the zoo, a trip to their favorite trampoline or play gym, or another fun excursion you know they have been wanting to go on) and let them know that they have to earn the prize.Ā  It is also a great way for the entire family to celebrate.
