The Ad Heard ‘Round the World

Bella Breakdown

Nike has just succeeded in creating one of the most controversial ads in history. The athletic company just dropped a campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick, with the slogan, “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.”

This ad was for Nike’s 30th anniversary, ‘Just Do It’ campaign. The ad references Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem during the 2017 NFL season to protest unfair and racist treatment of minorities in this country.

Colin’s protest either gained fans or alienated them, either way he got people talking. He also changed the way the NFL handles political protests.

They’ve actually threatened multiple fines against any players who decided to kneel during the National Anthem. Nike understood what they ad could do to their company, either creating extremely loyal consumers or alienating others, and went ahead and published it anyways.

No matter how you feel about the Nike campaign, there is not denying that it has created its own spot in history. There is a dialogue created from things like these, that can allow us to better understand the protests of our fellow human being.

Our country was built upon the foundation of individuals standing up for what they believed was right, no matter how they would be percieved by the opposition. We see you, Nike.
