We’ve all heard the reasons why drinking coffee is bad for you. It stains your teeth, stunts your growth, et cetera, et cetera. However, a new study has found that drinking coffee can assist you along your weight loss journey.

In a new study, researchers found that coffee might be a factor in burning calories through stimulating certain fat cells, known as brown adipose tissue, into releasing their energy.

The study was conducted by the University of Nottingham scientists and used thermal imaging to monitor participants’ brown fat reserves. Brown fat cells are used to primarily burn energy, while the white fat cells are there to store energy.

“Increasing its activity improves blood sugar control as well as improving blood lipid levels and the extra calories burnt help with weight loss,” said study co-author professor Michael Symonds.

Just because coffee is now linked to weight loss doesn’t mean you should up your caffeine intake just yet. The results were positive and we now need to ascertain that caffeine as one of the ingredients in the coffee is acting as the stimulus or if there’s another component helping with the activation of brown fat,” Symonds said
