How To Protect Your Skin This Winter

Bella Breakdown

Winter is coming! For many of you, it may already be here. Early snowstorms and frigid chills are sweeping the nation, and that means it’s time for cozy clothes, lots of layers and extra protection for your skin.

The harsh winter weather can be very damaging to your skin, especially if you already have dry or sensitive skin. Make sure you’re prepped with extra strength moisturizers and stay hydrated throughout the day to keep skin from drying out and flaking. Follow some of these tips to keep a healthy glow going all winter long.

Use Lukewarm Water
If you’re like me, you enjoy a scalding hot shower now and then. While it can feel really good if you’re coming in straight from a day in the snow, very hot water can strip healthy oils that your skin needs. Especially when washing your face, try to use lukewarm water to save some of those precious oils!

Moisturize Immediately!
The best time to moisturize your skin is right after you wash it, and even when the skin is still a bit damp. This creates the best foundation for moisturizer to seep into the skin and really hydrate and nourish. Use lotion over your whole body after you shower, and slather on that face cream after cleansing.

Pick The Right Moisturizer
Not all creams and lotions are created equal. Avoid water-based lotions and petroleum-based ingredients, as these can dry out your skin even more. Look for oil-based creams, lotions with natural ingredients and hydrating items like jojoba, coconut oil and lavender.

Cut Back On Exfoliation
Exfoliating scrubs and masks can feel great and make skin feel quite smooth after, but in the winter, they can be too harsh on your skins outer barrier. Cut back to once a week, or every other week, and look for exfoliates that have hydrating ingredients built in. If you naturally have very dry skin, avoid exfoliating at all.
