You Could Soon Be Flying From London To New York In Just Two Hours

Bella Breakdown

Traveling from London to New York is about to get a whole lot quicker. Aircraft company Boeing has proposed a new flight that could potentially only take two hours of travel between the U.K. and the U.S. and thus changing long-haul transportation as we know it.

The current flying time from London to New York takes just under seven hours, but according to Boeing, the aircraft is believed to be able to reach a “top speed of more than 3,800 mph.” If Boeing is successful that means the flight time will be cut by more than half the average time.

“When you look at the problem of getting from point A to point B anywhere in the world, the question is how fast do you want to go and how fast is fast enough?” said Kevin Bowcutt, the chief scientist of hypersonics at Boeing. Though you’ll be able to travel from one destination to another, those capabilities can’t be said about coming back.

“Supersonic isn’t really fast enough to go overseas and back in one day. For the business traveler or the military, where time is really important, that’s an interesting point,” Bowcutt said. For those excited about this new possibility in flights, sadly you still have some years before this superfast plane takes flight.

“You have to do these kinds of studies now to know where we have to push the technology and where we have to advance things,” Bowcutt admit. “Technologically we could have an [operational military] hypersonic aircraft, such as an ISR, flying in 10 years.
