Finding Time to Focus on Fitness: At-Home Workouts For On-The-Go Moms

Fitting in Fitness

After having my third child, losing the baby weight got really hard. It almost seemed downright impossible! Between lack of sleep, nursing, and taking care of three children, my days were packed so full that I had no time to exercise and had a very hard time focusing on eating healthfully.  I had to find ways to fit exercise into my new crazy life.

Get moving!  If you have small children, one of the exercises you can do that is totally free is walking.  Pushing a stroller is a great workout.  If walking or jogging is your thing, I highly recommend investing in a decent stroller that will allow you to stand upright (not slouched) while you are walking.  I wish I could count the miles I have logged with my Bob jogger!  It’s also a way to get some social time in.  I am always recruiting friends to walk with me.  If I have someone to chat with, the miles fly by!  If your children are school age, have them ride their bike while you jog along.  I love this one, as it allows me to spend time exercising with my kids.

Check the internet and other technology.  There are tons of resources on YouTube. One of my favorites is the Tone It Up best friends Katrina and Karina.  They have all different kinds of workouts that you can do at home with very little to no equipment.  If you know you will commit to it, you might want to invest in a good exercise DVD.  There are also lots of workout choices through some Cable subscribers.

Dinner time workout – while you are making dinner, use your kitchen counter to do standing incline push-ups, dips, and stretches. If you are microwaving something for two minutes, get down and do a plank and hold it until the timer dings.  You can also do 20 squats in between stirring things.  Push-ups, squats, jumping jacks, jump rope, Burpees, and mountain climbers are all things you can do in a rotation almost anywhere.  It sounds a little crazy, but every little bit counts!

The last component is your diet.
What you eat is equally as important as working out.  If you find yourself out and about doing countless errands without anything to eat, you will be more inclined to hit the drive-through or make some other bad choice.  Try and keep sliced fruits and veggies, yogurt, and sliced meats or hard-boiled eggs with you.  If you can fill up on the healthy stuff, your goal toward optimum fitness will be that much easier to achieve.

Hang in there!  Being a mom is a busy job, but you will have lots more energy for it if you make yourself a priority, too!
