You may be preparing for some fun summer activities, but one thing that may have slipped you mind are bug repellents. Instead of using chemical repellents found in stores try out these homemade repellents that will keep the mosquitoes away and let you enjoy the outdoors.

If you have a few empty mason jars lying around, simply add your favorite essential oils with water. Using oils like peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus or citrus will release a fragrance that will naturally repel mosquitoes. Add about 10 drops of oil to the water in the jar.

You’ll then add a few twigs of rosemary into your jar. The rosemary isn’t just a nice herb to add to the meats you’ll be barbecuing this summer, but will act as an extra repellent. If you don’t have any rosemary lying around, you can also use basil or peppermint.

Next step is to add slices of lime and lemon to the jar. Simply place some slices flat in the jar and others standing upright. Like the oils and herbs, the slices of citrus will make your homemade bug repellent even stronger due to the fruits’ natural fragrances. Once all of your ingredients are in the jar, you can then add a floating candle to each jar.

This will give your jar a nice look when you are entertaining guests during a nighttime gathering.
